Prohibition of the use of Metal or Plastic Clips
on Mooring Lines, Heaving Lines or Messenger Lines
- NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN by the Harbour Master of Portsmouth International
Port that after a serious accident in which a heaving line parted and whipped
back into the face of a mooring gang member;The use of any metal or plastic
clips or other hard fastenings on heaving lines, messenger lines or mooring
lines has been prohibited in the Commercial Port.
- The injury sustained was made much greater due to the fact that a metal
clip was being used on the heaving line to aid quick release by the crew and
it was noted that the recoil of this metal clip missed the mooring gang member's
eye by a few centimetres causing server injuries to his face.
- Mooring gang members have been instructed to cut off any such objects that
are a danger to the mooring gang.
- Mariners are herby advised to attach their heaving/messenger lines to the
mooring ropes by knots or hitches.
